Heating Your Pool
SOLAR PUMPS
Plug into the sun and enjoy your pool twice as much. Solar heating is by far the least expensive system to operate. In this system panels are usually located on the roof of the house. Pool water is pumped up through the collector and returned, as warm water, to the pool. On overcast days and at night solar systems must be switched off to prevent the reverse process of cooling the water occurring. Clearly, solar systems are not the best alternative for the pool owner who seeks heated swimming 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
HEAT PUMPS
Heat pumps can be costly to install, however there running costs often are substantially lower than the cost of an electric heater. The Heatpump employs the same principle used in refrigerators and air conditioners. The heatpump absorbs heat from the surrounding area and transfers it into the pool. In contrast to solar heating, the heat from this pump is available whether the sun is shining or not.
POOL BLANKETS AND ROLL AWAY STATIONS
By itself, a pool blanket can increase the water temperature by a couple of degrees and in the swimming season by several weeks. It is most effective, however, as a supplement to another heating system.
The roll-a-way station can be stationery or fully mobile. The roller and blanket can be wheeled away out of sight so as not to detract from the pool ambience or take up unnecessary poolside space.
