FENCING must be installed when the pool is built and before it is operational.  Outdoor play areas should never be included inside the fenced pool area.  Sand pits and jungle gyms must be completely segregated from the pool.

The latest technology fencing is the new removal Pool fence.  This offers totally security while being atheistically pleasing to the surround garden.  The mesh, which is available in various colours, blends in beautifully with the garden.

POOL NETS which offer central tensioning and an “easy release system” offer greater protection from drowning's and are simple for adults to manage.  They are available in blue and black with optional storage roller.

POOL COVERS  prevent leaves from getting in and the gradual evaporation of water, but they are also a good supplement to a heated pool. A bubble blanket is a must for the Gauteng nights when one is attempting to heat the pool.   The night temperatures, even in summer can drop quite low.  Some designs can be a pain to take on and off but a roll-a-way station certainly makes life easier.  There are automated pool covers that are imported into South Africa but they are very expensive and spares can be a problem when things go wrong.

TILES around a pool can get very wet, so make sure you select only the non-slip variety.  The Colonial Stone range of flagstones are completely suited to these conditions and are totally non-slip.  Natural Sandstone is a good medium to use as well but beware if you are going to have a Salt Chlorinator fitted and they do not handle salt very well.

CHEMICALS protect you in the water, but outside they can be lethal.  Some, if mixed with others, can explode, catch fire or give off poisonous gases.   Always store pool chemicals carefully.  Allergic reactions can cause sore eyes and skin rashes can be a serious problem if you overdose the pool with chemicals.

LIGHTING in the garden and pool area is essential, especially near pathways.   It not only makes the outdoor area safer but extends the hours you can use the pool. Night swimming or relaxing in a spa is great.
